Holiday Play Dough Recipe!

We’ve been “making” Christmas cookies (here’s an old video!) with this awesome homemade play dough. Many parents have asked me for the recipe, so here it is!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • food coloring
  • various extracts

You can heat treat your flour by spreading it on a pan lined parchment or a silicone mat. Put in a preheated 350 degree oven for 5-7 minutes until flour reaches a temp of 160 degrees. I think you only need to do this if you have little ones who might eat the playdough lol.

Put the water and salt in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. You want the salt to be dissolved.

Add the flour, oil, cream of tartar and mix well. You could start with a whisk, but I found that a wooden spoon works best. Continue to stir and cook over medium high until it thickens and is lump free. Mine took about 2 minutes.

Spread the play dough out on the empty pan and let it cool for 20 minutes or so. You want it to be cool enough so you can safely handle the dough.

I divided it into four parts and added food coloring and extracts. Some ideas :

  • sugar cookie : vanilla
  • candy cane : peppermint or other mint extract
  • gingerbread : cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger
  • almond : almond extract
  • pumpkin pie : pumpkin pie spice
  • chocolate : cocoa powder
  • lemon : lemon extract (or any other fruit!)

Short cut wooden dowels work well as rolling pins. We are using our sticks from the instrument cart!

Store play dough in an airtight container or bag and it will last for a long time!

Have fun!!! Share some pics with us!
