Little Musicians in 6 months?

I know that Yamaha works wonders on young children, but never have I experienced the drastic contrast as I did this past week.  At 5 o’clock, I taught a brand new class – lesson 1 – brand new beginners.  I always seem to forget that when they start, they really don’t know anything…..

Just the simple task of all breathing at the same time, so we can sing 5 notes together can seem like an impossible task.  Class is full of firsts –

• seeing the black key pattern of black and white
• experiencing playing a song all together
• switching ON at the same time
• listening for that amazing silence when the song is over
• hearing applause for a job well done

The list goes on and on – building the foundation for what will be come a group of amazing little musicians.

Next hour, 6’oclock – a concert celebrating the end of book 1 – only six months after their first lesson!  How amazing  it was to watch each child go up to the piano or Clavinova and confidently place their fingers to the keys.  They play their solos with such concentration and expression.  I loved listening to the sweet voices as they sing 8 memorized solfege melodies  (Click here to learn what solfege is!)  and songs with words.  They have learned so much music, and now they experience applause from an audience full of family and friends.
