SPRING FEVER!
What a tough winter we’ve had. Plants that have been growing over many years look like enormous nests. I keep wondering should I prune them? Are they gone forever and I need to clear them out? There are some beloved plants that I hope are just waiting for warmer temperatures, but I don’t know!
This reminds me of music students. We are finishing up that satisfying year of learning where children get excited about new things, new songs, practicing! Now I think they just want to go outside and play. This is a time where we teachers and parents begin to wonder if our children really like their lessons anymore. Has this activity run its course? Then I remember those dead looking trees and plants. Even though they look dead, under the ground they are busily putting out new roots to support the gorgeous new growth they will experience this spring and summer.
Music Students do the same. They seem to stall about this time of year, but they need opportunities to create new roots. Maybe they won’t conquer a new concept now, but they might make a file that that information can be put in come Fall. For us teachers, we have to be creative. How do we keep our students interested in music in this fallow time?
Our schedule is filled with chances to celebrate the year’s learning: concerts, Baseball Games (we do sing the National Anthem well!) Rollerskating ( you get to go if you practice!), and everyone loves a parade!
We encourage everyone to collect a beautiful bouquet of music this spring and share it with your friends and family. Spread your roots and next year, you will be an even more beautiful, vibrant musician!
